Does any one know if a T56 tranny will fit in a 1979 Camaro?

Sorry, I haven't heard of a T56 transmission. I have heard of T5 transmissions put into a second gen Camaro. GM designed the hump to be big enough for the TH400 transmission so most transmissions should fit.
The second gen Camaro is common enough that the transmission manufacturer might list it as possible or not possible application

I have no idea but if you are not buying the entire donor car you can try to get as much of the transmission hardware from the third gen. That way if you do need a part you would have it.

The center floor hump will need to be raised a bit to allow that trans to fit. My son is going to install a T56 in his 1981 Camaro.

Greg, which tranny needs the center hump raised? The T5, the T56, or both?

T-56. This is what a friend of my son that works at Detroit Speed told my son. They have done this conversion.

Wasn't sure. They started out talking about the T-56 and switched to the T5. I figured the T5 would fit without mods based on what Jim said, he knows 2nd gens(I don't).
New question, the original poster is 79ZZ4. If that means he's putting a ZZ4 in his 79, would it be a good idea to put a 83 T5 behind an engine with that kind of horse and torque? Just trying to help the guy out... |

I only said I have heard of T5 being put into second gen Camaros, not that there were not modifications when done. None of the stories I have heard included any horror stories pertaining to the process. When putting a transmission in a car that was never designed to have that tranmission you most likely will have some work to do.
I still know nothing of the T56
