    Default Tach problem 1981

Just completed a full resto on my 1981 Berlinetta (original owner). I swapped out the 305 for a new Performace GM 350 crate motor. My tach worked with the 305, when I removed the 305, the computer command control was removed. Does the tach rely on this? We wired the computer back up as best we could, but the new engine doesn't have any computer connections on the block, exhaust or intake. The wiring to the distributor is good. I do have a tach from a 79 Z28(non computer command control car) I was think of trying, any ideas?

Your 1981 Camaro should have a tach filter on the firewall that needs to be plugged into the engine harness and into the tach terminal on the HEI. See if that is unplugged or try another tach filter. Lets see some pictures of that Berlinetta.

Thanks Greg, I'll give that a look. Does the filter look like an old style distributor condensor? The car is in the body shop getting it's final wet sand and rub out of the clear (six coats). Painted it 94 GM quasar blue metallic with silver pearl SS stripes, silver custom cloth interior, added a cowl induction hood, all new exterior/interior trim. Car was stripped to bare metal, subframe pulled and blasted along with the engine compartment. POR15 semi-gloss on subframe and undercarriage, black laquer firewall and inner fenders. All new PST poly suspension, body mounts, KYB shocks. New 350 should be pushing about 300 hp, edelbrock performer intake, 600 carb, headman headers with stainless flowmaster exhaust, 4 speed and rear end rebuilt. The list goes on and on. Will post some pics when I get it back, I'll let you know how that filter tip works out.

Yeah the tach filter looks like a condenser and is near the accelerator cable. Can't wait to see the pictures of your car.

    Greg...
That fixed my problem, had one hell of a time finding that plug end, found it tucked under the booster. Plugged it in...works perfect! Will post some pictures soon, I added a semi-gloss black stripe on each side up to where the door body lines start. Going to lay a bright silver pinstripe above it, then install the body side moldings and new emblems.

    Thanks again.
